Woven linen sampler. Loosely woven linen ground worked with polychrome silks with alphabets, a verse entitled 'Of Improvement', various band patterns, single motifs and bowls of flowers and fruit. This sampler uses cross stitch, satin stitch and open work techniques. It is worked at the base with a frame enclosing a personal inscription, 'Katherine De Horne Her Work Finished In The 7th year of her age 1796'. The verse reads 'Learn by the bee from each event to find/Some hint of use or profit to your mind/Nothing so small but you may draw from thence/Improvement for your Virtue or your Sense/Honey like this life's evils will assuage/And yield you Sweets in your declining age'. Katherine de Horne was a Quaker.
