Full image caption

A silk ,wool and linen embroidered panel. The
panel features a man and woman in a garden; around the man and woman are various symbols. By the woman is a peacock, for pride, and by the man a cockatrice symbolising lust. Between the couple is the fountain of spirituality and harmony is represented by music in the form of a woman, playing the lute under a fruiting arbour. The male figure may be derived from an engraving by Hollar of c.1640 and the snail from a plate in Thomas Johnson's A Book of Beasts, Birds, Flowers etc., 1630.
