Maidservant carrying a breakfast tray. Employing a resident maidservant was a sign of middle-class respectability. Most were young girls under the age of 20 who worked between 15 and 18 hours a day. The work was physically demanding, and included running up and down several flights of stairs with scuttles of coal, cans of hot water and heavy trays.
