Keeling House, Canrobert Street. Keeling House seen from Winkley street. Designed by Denis Lasdun for Bethnal Green MBC, this was the first tower block to be listed - in 1993. In an attempt to retain community spirit, Keeling House, in Bethnal Green, was built to resemble a vertical stretch of Victorian terraced housing. Surrounding the central stairs and liftwells, the cluster of four towering wings was designed to encourage people to interact with each other. Despite its innovative approach, Denis Lasdun's structure had its share of social problems. It was derelict at the time of this photograph, but was bought by a private developer, refurbished and the flats put on the market in 2000.
