These people are marching through London to protest about the military coup which ousted President Salvador Allende in 1973. He was the popularly elected Marxist leader of Chile. General Augusto Pinochet took over from him and ruled as a dictator until 1990. The political repression of this era forced many Chileans to seek asylum abroad. This included members of the middle classes, trade unionists, artists, farmworkers and soldiers. Most were obliged to take low status jobs, including the professionals among them.
