Obverse of coronation of George I medal. The obverse shows the profile bust of George I, facing right. This is a Laureate meda. George I is shown here with long hair in scale armour with straps and mantle looped on the shoulder. George I was 54 and Elector of Hanover in Germany when he became King of England. William III and his successor Queen Anne had both died childless and the British Parliament planned to give the throne to one of their Protestant relatives. Some Stuart Catholics had better claims to the monarchy, but the English would not accept a Catholic king or queen. George I never spoke much English and preferred the company of German friends. Towards the end of his reign, Prime Minister Robert Walpole effectively held political power.
