Postcard view of an eel and pie shop. The facade of Taylor's eel and pie house follows a standard design, having two large windows either side of the central doorway. Customers could see a display of live eels in tanks in the windows. Dutch eels bought from Billingsgate market were stewed or used to fill fish pies sold from shops like Taylor's. A hearty hot meal of eels with a special liquor served over mash could be had for a reasonable price. Eel and pie shops were popular among working-class Londoners until after the end of World War II.
