SPCK silver medallion. Elliptical silver medallion with a suspension loop and purple silk ribbon. The obverse carries the inscription 'Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge/Church Training College for Lay Workers' in relief around the outer edge, with a central robed figure in relief carrying a cross and pointing skywards. The reverse is hallmarked and engraved with the inscription 'A.W.Mundy/23 Dec 1908'. The medallion was awarded to Arthur Mundy on the successful completion of his student training at the SPCK's Training College for Lay Workers in Stepney. The college was set up in January 1896 to educate men of working class as lay readers so that they might spread Christian knowledge amongst members of their own social class. After training with the SPCK, Arthur Mundy went on to attend the Church Army College in Blackheath. He left the College in 1914 and then worked for the Church Army until he was conscripted for World War I in 1916.
