Iron frame laundry mangle. This large mangle was used at the public laundry in Abbey Street, Bethnal Green. Bethnal Green Borough Council opened the laundry in 1898. The building also included a public washhouse with a separate entrance in Cheshire Street. The facilities provided local residents who had no running water at homes with a place to bathe and wash their clothes. Machines used in public laundries were often larger, power-driven versions of similar items used in homes.
