Traffic in smog at night. Thousands of Londoners died in the weeks immediately after the 'Great Smog' of December 1952. Debate arose over whether or not these deaths were a result of the polluted fog. In 1956 The Clean Air Act, which attempted to curb smoke pollution, was passed.
