A group of schoolboy trainspotters. Trainspotting became a schoolchild craze in the 1950s. Groups of 'spotters' would congregate in mainline railway stations equipped with notebooks and occasionally telescopes. Their hobby was to note down the numbers of each engine that came into the station, and then learn about their type, power and construction. In 1950, the Nationalised British Railways arranged a special outing for a group of 500 spotters. They travelled by train to Portsmouth from Waterloo station.
