Aluminium egg slicer. The slicer is marked on the base "English make". This aluminium egg-slicer was bought at the Purley branch of Woolworth's in 1921 for 6d - six pence. Woolworth's was the retail success story of the 1920s. The first English store opened in 1909 but throughout the 1920s Woolworth stores spread quickly through London's local high streets. Part of the chain's popularity was due to the promise that nothing in the stores cost more than 6d.
