Mechanical penny toy porter and trunk. By the beginning of the 20th century developments in manufacture allowed the mass-production of cheap toys and novelties. This mechanical penny toy and sweet container shows a porter pushing a trunk. The trunk has a sliding lid revealing a compartment used to store small sweets or 'cachous'. This is one of over 1,700 penny toys and novelties bought by Ernest King between 1893 and 1918. He bought this one on 20 December 1902.
