Mechanical penny toy football game. Made in Germany, this mechanical tinplate toy represents two footballers attempting to score a goal. Mass-produced toys of this period often reflected popular culture and this one indicates the growing popularity of football in Europe during the early 20th century. Ernest King bought it on 12 December 1913 from a London street vendor. He bought over 1,700 penny toys between 1893 and 1918 and recorded the purchase of every one.
