Tinplate mechanical toy tennis players. Johann Phillip Meier made this rare tinplate mechanical penny toy in Nuremburg, Germany. It depicts two tennis players facing each other and contains a mechanism that moves the white ball from the man's racket to the girl's racket as the man leans backwards. A London street vendor sold the toy to Ernest King on 7 March 1908. Street vendors were a common source of penny toys, which could also be bought in small toyshops and department stores including Gamages in Holborn.
