This notice announces a suffragette deputation to Buckingham Palace on May 21, 1914. At a previous deputation in 1910, police in Parliament Square had assaulted suffragettes, and the event had become known as 'Black Friday'. This notice asks supporters to 'Come and see that these violent and brutal attacks on women are not repeated on May 21st'.
The organisers' hopes were dashed when the deputation of 21 May again ended in a violent struggle between the suffragettes and the police. More than 60 women were arrested, including Emmeline Pankhurst, who was restrained outside the gates of Buckingham Palace while trying to present a petition to the king.
