a Portrait of Captain Alexander Sim, at the age of 93 by Frank Holl (1845-1888). Sim was a director of the Commercial Dock Company and was commissioned by the Company for their board room. Holl was a leading social-realist and portrait painter of the late Victorian period. Bertram Stewart writes in 'The Library and the Picture Collection of the Port of London Authority': 'The portrait of Captain Alexander Mitchell Sim 1881, by Frank Holl, R.A. (1845-1888), is that of a director of the Commerical Dock Company at the age of ninety-three, and was commissioned by the Company for their Board Room for a fee of four hundred guineas. Captain Sim died in 1882, just after the portrait was completed, having been a director for thirty four years since 1847
