Full image caption
Roman bone hairpin. Foreground shows a close up of the hairpin, the background the entire pin. This hairpin is carved in bone and shows a portrait of Vibia Sabina - wife of Emperor Hadrian who ruled from 117- 138AD. Sabina's portrait is highly decorated and her drapery and hair, which is surmounted by the imperial diadem, is very well modelled.
