Group of garnets cut en cabochon. This group of gems are part of a number of precious and semi-precious stones found in the Cheapside hoard. This garnet comes from India and like most of the other stones contained in the Cheapside hoard these stones have been cut 'en cabochon'. These stones were known to early 17th century Londoners as 'carbuncles' and were fastened to the forehead with a strip of cloth to cure watery eyes, or overcome melancholy. The majority of garnets are cut small. These ones are small gems of bright red colour.
