Cat's Meat Man in an East End street: c.1900

image details

Full image caption
This photograph shows a cat's meat man with the barrow of horsemeat that he sold as pet food to the residents of a deprived street in the East End.
The photograph was taken by John Galt, a missionary with the London City Mission and an amateur photographer and was one of many photographs that he produced to show conditions in the East End and the work of the mission. His intention was to show that, contrary to popular middle-class belief, the people of the East End were worthy of salvation.
