A group portrait showing the colourman (John Middleton), probably holding a sample book, and his children from left to right: Jesse, Anna, Sarah & Joshua. The lady on the left was the housekeeper. The scene is set at the house in St. Martin's Lane (probably on the first floor) where the Middletons lived and worked.
